Fibre Optic Modems

Fibre optic modems are often used in data communication systems to bridge long distances at high data rates. Fibre optic systems are particularly immune to electromagnetic interference and therefore very suitable for harsh industrial environments. Westermo products can transmit data at up to 12 Mbit/s over distances up to 80 km depending on the fibre type.

Point to Point, RS-232, PROFIBUS DP and RS-422/485 for point to point communication.

Fibre Line sharing devices, RS-232, PROFIBUS DP and RS-422/485 in multi-point, ring or redundant ring applications.

The new fibre optic modems, ODW-series, are available with 4 different transceivers:

LC-2    Multimode 5 km
LC-15 Single mode 15 km
LC-40 Single mode 40 km
LC-80 Single mode 80 km

Fibre Optic cable has the advantages that it is completely insensitive to electrical and magnetic disturbances. It is therefore ideal to install as a communication media in harsh industrial environments.

It also provides benefits such as high data rates over long distances. Depending on choice of transceiver and cable (multimode / singlemode) distances up to 80 km (49.7 mi) can be achieved.

The ODW-series can be used in point-to-point, multidrop and redundant ring installations between devices with serial interfaces.
