PRESENTATION
Industrial Network Protocols – which one to use?

Dear ,
The bulk of Control Systems rely on PLC systems. As these have become more powerful, the links to the field devices have moved away from discrete IO and have been replaced by Field Device Networks. While these are very powerful and offer a huge amount of flexibility, they do vary in the topologies they use and in their ability to relay different types of information.
Many of these network types have been created either directly by the PLC manufacturer themselves or by organizations that are heavily influenced by the PLC manufacturer or national standards. Over the years this has led to PLC manufacturers offering networking solutions to suit their own PLC types – sometimes with the view that once installed the customer is committed to their technologies and they can then exclude the competition – except where the customer is willing to replace an entire control system at great expense and frustration. Engineers are sometimes even forced into buying another product to fit the PLC type, rather than his process requirements.
As a user of PLCs, what should the customers be looking for in a fieldbus network? What technologies are available? Which network type will be suitable for your application?
How can you change or incorporate different network types to get the best out of your control system?
This presentation will cover topics such as:
- Network basics (Serial / Ethernet)
- Industrial Network types and what technologies they are based on
- Different types of interface solutions
Technical and application facts will be presented and there will be a question & answer session.
